It is possible for both women and men to produce a milky discharge from one or both nipples without being pregnant or breast feeding. This form of lactation is called galactorrhea. The condition can be caused by several factors ranging from hormonal problems to excessive breast and nipple stimulation, medications, including antipsychotics, antidepressants, and drugs for high blood pressure. It can also be caused by some underlying ailments such as an underactive thyroid, chronic kidney disease as well as nerve damage to the chest from an injury or surgery. Other causes are; some types of hormonal birth control, spinal cord surgery or injury, use of marijuana, opioids, or cocaine, and some herbal supplements. In rare cases, people may lactate due to an emotional reaction when physically close to an unrelated baby.
