Senator John McCain, who declared his struggles with multiple cancer afflictions weeks before the poll, and even having to remove a few from his skin in the course of the presidential campaign, was re-elected to the senate last year, making it the eighth time he would represent Arizona. With the benefit of hindsight, how one wished he had bettered black-man Barack Obama in 2008, to save the world of his presidential megalomania. But is it not a sweeter victory for “the saner world” to have a political Lilliput like Donald Trump dismantle the anti-Christ-like legacies of Barack, who almost turned the world belly-upside-down. I will never buy the argument of Obama trying to enhance American values, with those outrageous sinful policies on sexual orientation. If his mum had passionately promoted abortion the way he did under the guise of funding the Planned Parenthood, the circumstances of his birth, should have made aborting his pregnancy an easy decision to make. What about his determined pursuit of legalizing crack and pot. Regrettably, it took his first daughter, Malia, becoming a marijuana addict, before he pretended to be a father with the right values. Will decent humanity forget his wild jubilation the day American Supreme Court lined constitutionality behind the despicable acts of LGBTs (Lesbians, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender). I won’t be employ tact in condemning sin. I was ceaseless in my prayer from that day that his legacies would not endure and his memories, furiously undone. God answered and thankfully, his undesirable footsteps are being systemically erased.
Good old John didn’t become president but he is a more honourable man, with Washington standing still for him in his current battle with brain cancer. At 81, he could hide his ailment and possibly got killed quietly by it, considering that he went for routine check-up, before the news that dropped jaw worldwide. An uncompromisingly-divided Congress immediately went into bi-partisan mode, throwing a moral weight behind John. Despite the much-celebrated openness in the American health sector, your physician still requires your permission to unveil your diagnosis and prognosis, in line with the doctor/patient code, underlining the medical practice. Infact, John’s physicians made it abundantly clear the release to the public, of his latest fight against cancer, was at the patient’s instance. And hasn’t the result of such desirable openness beautiful, making a mockery of the ugliness of cancer?
Yes, the stern old man wasn’t president and not likely to be again, but in the estimation of the world with his image as a war-hero, he is better regarded than many presidents put together and at the risk of self-deprecation as an African, I would say, higher in international stature than all African presidents put together. Yet, he didn’t mind the world knowing his medical condition and instead of opprobrium, the entire world rose in salutation and support. Infact, the most important issue in America today, repealing and replacing Obamacare, is practically marooned in John’s chemo sessions.
The most-pushed reason for an average African being coy about sickness disclosure is cultural dictates. For African leaders, stability in the polity is usually added to the culture excuse. As I write this on Friday, Nigerian leader, President Muhammadu Buhari has been in UK for 75 days and by the time you are reading this, it would be close to 80 days, with his ailments remaining in the realm of cruel conjectures. While it is not acceptable wishing any human being evil, it is difficult to fault the arguments upon which those assumed crippling diagnosis are based.
Let’s accept for the sake of argument that Buhari doesn’t owe the entire nation his exact whereabouts and what ails him, what about those who gave him the 15 million “clean” votes. Aren’t they also qualified to know how their “investment” is doing? Yes, it could be argued that Acting President Yemi Osinbajo is part of the deal offered the 15 million supporters and since he’s “properly” in the saddle, his principal should be allowed to nurse his ailment in peace. What about then, the 12 million voters of 2011, mainly Northerners? Will the Hausa-language Sallah message cover that?
Okay, let’s accept he owes nobody any explanation, since he wont seek votes again. What about his own credibility, considering his stance on his Yar’Adua, seven years ago. If Buhari speaks out today, 80 percent of Nigerians, possibly including Ayo Fayose, will commence definite prayers for him. Now how do you intercede for a man whose problem isn’t known.
If Buhari is still conscious enough to speak or write, he should, for his own sake, ask his handlers to immediate tell Nigerians the much-to-be-known about his current state. He was close to doing that the last time he returned from treatment in London. He mentioned blood transfusion, never-been-this-sick and bla bla bla. He should jettison warped logic. My president is an honourable man. He is in the class of McCain. Today, Arizona is nudging Daura.
