A middle-aged man, Alilat Alabi, has been dragged to a Magistrate Court sitting in Ondo town, Ondo State over the alleged unlawful conversion of N500,000 to his use without the consent of the owner
Alabi was arraigned following his failure to pay the sum of N500,000 meant for the purchase of cow skin purchased from one Jubril Adamu.
Alabi was said to have committed the offence in 2019 after purchasing cow skin worth N500,000 from Adamu with a promise to pay within one week after selling the cow skin but failed to pay for the goods after two years.
The charge sheet stated that the defendant committed the offence sometime in 2019 at Okedibo Street, Ondo, contrary to section 383 punishable under section 390(9) and 419 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Volume 1 law of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.
The charge sheet read in part, ”That you, Alilat Alabi, sometimes in the year 2019 at Okedibo Street, Ondo, in the Ondo Magisterial District did fraudulently and unlawfully converted the sum of N500,000 to your own use without the consent of the owner, one Jubril Adamu and thereby committed an offence contrary to 383 and punishable under section 390(9) of the Criminal code cap 37 volume 1 law of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.
“That you Alabi Alilat on the same date, time and place, in the aforementioned magisterial district did fraudulently and unlawfully obtain some cow skin of N500,000 from one Jubril Adamu under the false pretence of paying him a week later which you failed to do and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 419 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Volume 1 Law of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him.
The police prosecutor, Akano Moremi, told the court that three witnesses would be called to testify in the case, and applied for a date to enable him to study the case file.
Lawyer for the defendants, Ibrahim Adedeji applied for the bail for the defendant while the Presiding Magistrate, Mrs M.S. Ikujuni, granted the defendant N1m bail and one reasonable and credible surety in like sum.
Ikujuni adjourned the case till July 26, 2021, for trial.
