Makinde reinstates governing boards for Oyo public schools

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, on Monday, reinstated School Governing Boards (SGBs) for the 643 public schools in the state. At the onset of the Makinde administration, the state government had the SGBs take the back seat for the sake of accountability.

Makinde had in 2019 said the SGBs were to be reconstituted and mandated to do a regular audit.

Keen on accountability of the SGBs, Makinde had also said that principals, who are secretaries of the SGBs, and the finance committee of the SGBs will have varying approval limits.

Inaugurating the reconstituted Chairmen and board members of the SGBs, at the University of Ibadan, Makinde enjoined all the board members to work hard not only at ensuring more prudent and economical use of available resources for maximum outcome in our schools but also to make self-sacrifices to transform the schools structurally and academically.

Represented by Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Olubamiwo Adeosun, the Oyo governor said the SGBs will help reinforce his administration’s achievements in the education sector.

He implored every board member to see this assignment as a way of giving back to their respective communities as well as contributing their own quota to the development of Oyo State.

Speaking further, he declared that all the policies introduced by his government in the education sector were yielding positive results.

According to him, such policies were evident in a drastic reduction in the number of out of school children and enrolment explosion in public schools as well as improvement in learning outcomes. This is as he asserted that schools in the state were now adequately staffed with contented teachers who are remunerated as and when due
every month.

Makinde added that the state was subscribing to SGB as a broad-based participatory management structure in the schools and towards attracting alternative funding sources for education in the state.

Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Education, Mr Abdulrahman Abdulraheem lauded the governor for giving approval to the retention of the School Governing Board, saying: “From what could be seen and records available, the School Governing Boards in our schools have dutifully, wonderfully and passionately attended to the various necessities of the schools.

“These include infrastructure, pedagogical issues and personnel. The Boards have been able to effectively harness available resources and goodwill to impact and improve our secondary school system. We thank God Almighty that every stakeholder has played and is assiduously playing the expected role very well.

“As we usher in the new set of Leadership into the School Governing Boards of 643 public secondary schools in the state, I want to urge the new Board Chairmen and Secretaries i.e. Principals to work together harmoniously and selflessly to achieve a total turnaround of our schools.”
