Make masses centre of your policies, not politicians, NUT urges Tinubu

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has called on President Bola Tinubu and his cabinet members to always think about the masses first and not the politicians in their policies and programmes, saying life has become almost unbearable in the last one year for most Nigerians.

The Secretary-General of the union, Mike Ene made this call when asked to assess the state of the nation in the last one year of the current administration.

According to him, Nigerian masses including teachers are struggling to survive because of the high inflation that bit harder every day.

He said even though Nigeria’s economy was in bad shape before Tinubu assumed power one year ago, the situation has become substantially worse today.

According to him, except we are deceiving ourselves as a country, Nigeria and the generality of its people are seriously bleeding as prices of goods and services have blown off the roof, causing untold hardship for most Nigerians.

He said it is not an exaggeration to say there is too much hunger and pain most families are going through and it is unfortunate that no one is sure when the hardship will last.

He declared that no sector of the economy is faring well except the political class and their cronies who have lots of resources themselves.

Ene disclosed that most of the promises of the current government to alleviate people’s suffering are not backed with action, making them remain mere promises.

The NUT scribe noted that the abrupt removal of petroleum subsidy by President Tinubu on day one of his administration without planning for support to mitigate its likely effects on people sparked the current economic crisis that is daily pushing the costs of living up and quality of life down.

He said the government is all about people, by making them live a quality life and be happy but that any policy or programme of government at any level that does not translate to such happiness is anti- people-oriented policy.

He observed that so far, the various economic policies of the Federal Government, particularly through the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN) had no positive impacts on the masses.

According to him, the policies and programmes, are not only taking foods off peoples’ tables but also widening the gap between the rich and the poor such that the average class has almost disappeared from Nigeria’s system.

Ene, however, urged the president and the various state governors to ensure they always do proper planning for policy implementation before they make them and stop doing trial-and-error policies.
