Livestock dealers in Kwara under the aegis of the Kwara State Association of Ram Goats and Sheep Sellers Association have called on the state government to fulfill its promise of financial assistance made to them to mitigate losses they suffered recently.
It would be recalled that over 40 cows were reportedly killed due to farm poisoning in April 2024 at a village close to College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies (CAILS), Ilorin.
The chairman of the Kwara State Ram, Goat and Sheep Sellers Association, Mandate Market located at Adewole Housing Estate area in Ilorin, Mallam Abdulrasheed Shuaib, urged Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to fulfill the financial assistance promised after the incident.
The chairman, who said that many of his members were yet to recover from the huge loss suffered in the incident, added, “The governor promised to assist us when we lost so many cows in April and are yet to receive his message. We have done all the necessary things, including documentation which the government required from us.
“We have submitted our letters to all the security agencies and also to the Government House as required by the government. So, we are now waiting for government’s assistance”.
Mallam Shuaib explained that the appeal to the state government became expedient, “many of us took loans from different banks while some are living on money got from cooperatives societies. Some people also took urgent loans from individuals and financial institutions, which had attracted large interest and there is need to return these funds,” he said.
It is recalled that the Kwara state government had warned members of the public not to patronize illegal meat selling points disposing meat at cheaper rate in April this year over the mysterious deaths of some cows in the metropolis.
It was gathered that the reported mysterious death led to slaughtering of about 40 cows at a location called Atere Road near the College of Arabic and Islamic Studies (CAILS) area, Ilorin by some people.
The Nigerian Tribune gathered that a group called Kwara Monitoring Group (KMG) had released a statement saying that over 33 cows were slaughtered and distributed to butchers to be sold after they
were suspected poisoned and died.
