Lawyer petitions Ekiti speaker, seeks investigation into killing of FUOYE students

An Osogbo based legal luminary, T.B Ayodele has called on the speaker of the Ekiti state House of Assembly, Honourable Funminiyi Afuye to order full-scale investigation into the recent killing of two students of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE)
It will be recalled that two students of the institution, Kehinde Dada and Friday Okonofua were allegedly killed by security agents on September 10 following an attack on the convoy of the wife of the state governor, Mrs Bisi Fayemi while protesting incessant power outage in the university community.
As obtained by Nigerian Tribune, Ayodele in a petition dated September 20, 2019, and received by the office of the speaker on October 14 noted that the killing of the two students were avoidable, alleging that the police officers attached to the convoy of the governor’s wife were responsible for the death of the promising students.
He, therefore, urged the House to call the wife of the governor to order, describing the office of the First lady as illegal and unknown to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria( As amended 2010)
The lawyer further said the commissioner of police in the state, Amba Asuquo must be summoned to investigate the governor’s wife and also prosecute the officers involved in the killing and made public recommendations of such investigation.
The petition read in part, “That the Noble House of Assembly should immediately sponsor a bill to declare the office of ‘First Lady’ of Ekiti state as illegal, unlawful and inconsistent with the provisions of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (As Amended 2010)
” That the Ekiti state of House of Assembly under your watch and leadership should summon the Commissioner of Police of Ekiti state to arrest, investigate and prosecute Erelu Bisi Fayemi as Injustice anywhere is Injustice everywhere and that the commissioner of Police should also fish out the assailant murderous policeman(men) among his men for proper prosecution.
” That the House should also constitute a committee which will investigate the matter as clearly stated above and the outcome of such investigation and the recommendation therein be published and made public.”
Responding, the speaker, Hon. Afuye who spoke with Nigerian Tribune said the petition like others would be forwarded to the House Committee on the public petition for necessary deliberations.
The Special Adviser on Media to the speaker, Tai Oguntayo said, “The House committee on the public petition will work on the petition and will invite all parties concerned and make their recommendations to the plenary for deliberations on the immediate and remote cause of the crisis.
” The speaker will not just make any pronouncement without following the laid down processes in the legislative house.”
