AN Islamic scholar and director of Muflihun High School, Ibadan, Ustaz Rasheed Hashim, has called on parents to inculcate the fear of God in their children as part as measures to reverse the gradual decline of moral and social values in contemporary society.
Hashim made this call at a pre-Ramadan lecture/fundraiser organised by the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Muslim Graduates Association (LAUMGA), Ibadan branch, held on Sunday at the Oyo State secretariat, Ibadan.
According to the scholar, parents owe the duty of training their children in a godly manner because the genesis of most societal problems is traceable to the primary social institution, the family unit.
Speaking on the topic ‘Ideal Home: Impetus for Societal Reformation’, Hashim lamented the increased involvement of teenagers in fetish practices for the purpose of acquiring inordinate wealth, saying there was the need for parents to prevail on their children and teach the virtues of honest living, hard work and patience.
While underscoring the importance of education, he charged parents to prioritise Western education and familiarise their kids with the word of God.
Hashim noted that for a home to be an ideal Muslim home, it should be free from some evils such as music and pornographic materials, as the parents must be sensitive about what their children are exposed to.
The branch chairman of LAUMGA, Professor K.K. Salman, explained that the lecture was organised to correct the menace of broken homes, in partial fulfillment of the objectives of the association.
Professor Salman said a recent report showed a gloomy rate of marriage dissolutions in current times which, he said, have grave implications “for our society.”
He stated that the event was also meant to raise funds for LAUMGA’s N20 million Muslim cemetery project.
Professor Salman explained that the group embarked on the project to meet an essential of the Muslim community.
“Although we are quite aware of the existence of some [Muslim cemeteries], it is our belief that the establishment of another [one] will foster more accessibility and support Muslims in complying with the Sunnah of Holy Prophet Muhammad that commands us to bury our dead in the cemetery,” he said.
