LAPO combats cancer, sensitises 12,997 community members in Benin

The Lift Above Poverty Organisation (LAPO) has restated its commitment to cancer prevention in Nigeria through the implementation of the LAPO Community Campaign for Cancer Control (LAPO-C4) project.

Dr Honestus Ayo Obadiora, the Executive Director, who stated this in Benin, said the organisation has since 2016 been involved in the battle against cancer through the implementation of the LAPO-C4) project in Nigeria, with Lagos, Imo, Abuja, Rivers, and Edo as focal states.

Over the years, he said that LAPO has played a major role in improving the health status of rural community members by addressing maternal and child health issues, the challenges of malaria, and other tropical diseases across the country.

In the First Half of 2023, Obadiora said LAPO conducted a mass cancer awareness campaign across the target states, where it sensitised 12,997 community members and screened and referred 164 people for further screening and treatment in government-approved health facilities.

He noted that 37,412 community members were also enlightened on cancer through Information, education, and Communication (IEC) materials during the period.

The Executive Director explained that more than 50% of cancer cases occur in developing countries, disclosing that the ailment is the second most common cause of death after cardiovascular disease, constituting 12% of all deaths and killing more people than HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined.
