Landgrabbers have taken over 35-year-old Ogun secondary school, traditional ruler petitions Abiodun

The Olu of Isiun in Obafemi-Owode local government area of Ogun State, Oba Lawrence Odeyinka, has petitioned Governor Dapo Abiodun after landgrabbers allegedly took over the site of the town’s only secondary school, Isiun High School.

Oba Odeyinka further said the development is forestalling plans to resuscitate the school built in 1980 by the former governor of Olabisi Onabanjo.

While noting that school has been shut down since 1986 by the then military administration of Dipo Diya, he said plans had been underway to revive it as part of activities to celebrate his 70th birthday anniversary.

He pointed out that the closure of the school has since forced students whose parents are well-to-do to get secondary education in faraway communities while others had to forego the same.

Oba Adeyinka said: “We have a secondary school here in Isiun, a grammar school. It was built during the years of late Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, a former Governor of Ogun State in 1980. It was locked during the years of Diya in 1986.

“The town began to grow and our children began to attend schools the more. They started attending Owode High School, Egba Owode Grammar School and Orillegbole Grammar school.

“Some of them were injured by motorcycle accidents. Some girls were taken advantage of and got impregnated while those whose parents could not afford transport fares stopped going to school.”

The traditional ruler added that renovating the school would help the students in the community get easy access to education, urging the government to intervene.

“Indigenes of the town in the diaspora are already donating for the project. The government has come to inspect it. We then decided to erect a signboard to create awareness for the school.

“The signboard that has been there for months has been removed. Those we suspect are those who have been building houses on that land. We have been trying to talk to them for a while but they don’t want to yield.”
