Lagos MAN advocates better teaching techniques for Mathematics

Published by

TEACHERS of Mathematics have been urged to embrace innovative methods in their work in order to get the attention of students and improve their performance in the subject.

This was the consensus of participants at the Annual General Meeting of the Lagos State chapter of the Mathematical Association of Nigeria (MAN), where new executive members of the association were also elected.

In his acceptance speech, the new chairman of the association, Dr Nasirdeen Malik, said tackling the problem of failure in Mathematics was his administration’s number one priority.

“We want to make Mathematics more pleasurable. For years, people have been failing Mathematics in West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and National Examination Council (NECO) examination. What is responsible for this? This is part of the questions this regime wants to provide answers to,” Dr Malik said.

He said in addressing the situation, the association, in conjunction with the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders, would be organising trainings and workshops for Mathematics teachers.

He, therefore, challenged teachers of Mathematics in primary and secondary schools as well as in tertiary institutions to identify with MAN.

A newly installed fellow of the association, Mr Abiodun Hassan, identified the use of instructional materials, songs and mnemonic devices as one of the ways to simplify the subject and arouse the attention of students.

“The problems with the teaching and learning of Mathematics come from the students, teachers, society,  social media, among others.  Students see the subject as problematic due to the teaching methods. If you use all these play-away methods, you will have positive results,” Hassan said.

He advised teachers to deemphasise monetary gains and see the students as their own children and the future.

The new deputy chairperson of the association is Mrs Odubolanle Oludipe; Mr Ibraheem Adebiyi retained his seat as the Secretary General, to be assisted by Mr Ademola Afolabi.

Other officers include Mrs Abimbola Okoilu and Mr Bashiru Irinoye who emerged as Treasurer and Financial Secretary respectively.

Mr Sulaiman Ayuba  and Mr Nurudeen Abdul are the Publicity Secretary 1 and 2 respectively while Mrs Adijat Azeez-Olowu is the new Social Secretary.

The event was graced by dignitaries in the education sector, including the Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on Education, Mrs Adetola Salau and  the State chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Mr Akintoye Hassan.
