Lagos State Government has introduced what it called edutainment in schools with a view to improving the teaching and learning abilities of both teachers and students in class

The state’s Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo highlighted the importance of this initiative at this year’s edition of the state’s organised Festival of Instructional Materials held on Wednesday at Alausa secretariat in Ikeja,

She said the state government is developing various methods that could help particularly students in improving their learning outcomes while also affording them the opportunities to display their innate skills and talents.

Speaking on the theme of this year’s event, “Edutainment in the 21st Century Classroom: Panacea for the Achievement of Education 2030 Agenda,” Mrs Adefisayo said the essence is to stimulate educators to adapt to the new instructional strategies of teaching as it is done in developed climes.

She observed that asides from academic work, students are also gifted in entertainment and other various co-curricular engagements that could enhance their studies and also better prepare them for a future relevance.

According to the commissioner, in a statement made available by the head of the public affairs unit of the ministry, Mr Ganiu Lawal, the administration of Babajide Sanwo-Olu on education is to ensure that real teaching and learning are taking place in schools for the purpose of real economic transformation of the state and the country at large.

She said that was why the state is exposing its teachers to world best practices on the job even as students are coming forth with good results to show for the efforts.

In his own remarks, Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr Abayomi Abolaji, said the uniqueness of the edutainment is that it makes learning fun and more interesting to students as it is purely practical.

He noted that teaching was no longer teacher but learner-centred, promising that the ministry would continue to give quality learning a priority.

He, however, urged the students to be more committed to their studies, saying that is a pathway to secure for themselves, a better future.

The high point of the event was the involvement of students from various education districts of the state in competitions that ranged from the use of musical instruments, dancing, staging of drama and projects execution with schools that performed outstandingly rewarded with gift items.
