Lagos: Cargoes trapped, port users stranded as workers commence strike

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) on Tuesday shut down the nation’s busiest ports of Apapa and Tin-Can, including other ports across the country in solidarity with a directive from the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

The union also shut down the nation’s first deep seaport, the Lekki Deep seaport.
The strike according to the labour unions was based on infractions and encroachments on the rights of workers in Imo State and the brutality of NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero.

As of the time of filing in this report, no cargo-laden truck was seen either going into the ports or exiting the ports in Lagos.
The MWUN delegation led by its President-General, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju was seen at the Apapa Port and later at Tin-Can Port, with a large Entourage of workers visibly present to monitor compliance to the port shutdown.
