Labour group demands immediate, unconditional release of NLC President

Published by

The Democratic Socialist Movement (DSM) has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Mr Joe Ajaero and others being held by the Imo State Police Command.

This demand was contained in a statement by the publicity secretary of DSM, Peluola Adewale.

The group decried the police’s arrest of Ajaero who it noted was executing a mandate of the NLC National Executive Council (NEC) to lead Imo State workers on a strike against flagrant abuses of their rights and privileges by the State government.

According to the group, the arrest of the NLC President showed signs of repression by government, which it condemned.

The DSM also expressed shock at the incident adding that the action was an affront on the labour movement in Nigeria which would be resisted.

If Ajaero is not released unconditionally, the group warned that the nation could witness an all-out nationwide action involving strikes and mass protests to demonstrate the unity and resolve of the working class.
