Labour accuses Cross Rivers’ HoS of intimidation over resumption directive

The organised Labour in Cross River State has accused the state Head of Service (HoS) of intimidation and kicked against her directive that all workers and permanent secretaries resume work on Wednesday.

Reacting to a press release signed by the HoS, Mrs Geraldine Akper-Ekanem, on Wednesday, the labour union pushed against the directive and issued a counter “Bulletin 3”, urging all their members to stay at home.

The labour in their bulletin wrote that the government is supposed to serve the people and that salaries are “sadly paid” by consultants and not the Accountant General.

“The Head of Service, Mrs Geraldine Akper-Ekanem is misleading the governor. Instead of her advising the governor to listen to the plight of workers, she is threatening and trying to intimidate workers.

“Salaries are paid by consultants and not the Accountant General. This is part of our anger. Continue to stay at home, don’t be intimidated,” the union told its members.

The HoS had on Tuesday evening issued a press release directing all permanent secretaries and all workers to resume work on Wednesday, October 13, 2021.

“Following the industrial action embarked on by the Organised Labour on Tuesday, October 12th, 2021, the state government has directed all permanent secretaries and workers to return to work with effect from tomorrow, Wednesday, October 13th by 8:00 am this is to enable the relevant officers to facilitate the payment of salaries of civil servants who are yet to be paid,” the HoS wrote.

The release further warned that failure to adhere to the directive would attract sanctions.

As of press time, the strike in Cross River was still in full force as labour still insisted on their demands.
