Kwara poly alumni raise alarm over institution’s land encroachment

Published by

Kwara State Polytechnic Worldwide Alumni Association has called on Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq-led state government, relevant stakeholders and eminent alumni of the institution to take immediate action to address the issue of encroachment of the polytechnic land.

Speaking with journalists in Ilorin on Wednesday, the protem president of the association, Engineer Abu Salami, in the company of other members of the group, raised the alarm that over 51 per cent of the land had been encroached upon, while only six per cent was being currently utilized by the polytechnic.

He said that the remaining 43 per cent of the polytechnic land was locked within villages surrounding the institution and is currently inaccessible for the growth and development of the school.

The alumni association, which warned the alleged trespassers upon the Polytechnic lands to vacate the lands, described their actions as not only illegal but also detrimental to the progress and future of the institution.

“We demand that you immediately vacate the unlawfully occupied areas and cease any further encroachment.

“Let it be known that failure to comply with this warning will result in legal consequences. The encroachers and trespassers will be held accountable for their actions in accordance with the law”.

The association also said that it would support all efforts by the appropriate authorities to reclaim the institution’s lands, adding that it would work closely with the Kwara state government, land management authorities, and law enforcement agencies to ensure full enforcement of the law and the protection of the polytechnic’s property.

“We urgently request the Kwara State Government to prioritize the protection of Kwara State Polytechnic lands. It is imperative that swift and decisive action is taken to halt further encroachment and reclaim the unlawfully occupied areas. The government’s intervention is crucial to ensuring the long-term viability and growth of our beloved institution.

“We call upon the esteemed alumni of Kwara State Polytechnic, individuals who have excelled in various fields and positions of influence, to lend their voice and support to this cause. Your influence and advocacy can play a pivotal role in raising awareness, mobilizing resources, and galvanizing action to rectify this unfortunate situation. Together, we can make a difference.

“The Kwara State Polytechnic Worldwide Alumni Association remains steadfast in its commitment to protect the interests of our beloved alma mater. We believe that by addressing this encroachment issue, we can secure a brighter future for Kwara State Polytechnic and uphold its legacy as a leading institution of learning and innovation.

“We invite all concerned parties to join hands in safeguarding the lands of Kwara State Polytechnic and ensuring a prosperous future for generations to come. Together, let us make a resounding statement against encroachment and stand united in our support of Kwara State Polytechnic.

“We implore all relevant stakeholders, including land management authorities, community leaders, and law
enforcement agencies, to collaborate in resolving this pressing issue. By working together, we can formulate effective strategies, enforce legal boundaries and prevent further encroachment on the polytechnic’s lands”.
