Kwara governor lauds NYSC on unity

Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq has praised the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for its contributions to national unity and development over the past 50 years.

The Governor made these comments during a Unity Walk to commemorate the scheme’s golden anniversary, which is scheduled for May 22.

Governor Abdulrazaq commended corps members for their community development service projects across the state, while also encouraging them to continue their service to the nation with integrity and hard work.

He emphasized the importance of personal development and using the NYSC platform to discover oneself.

The Chairman of the state NYSC Governing Board, Hon. Olabode Towoju, also addressed the corps members, applauding them for their tenacity in serving the country, even in the midst of difficulty. He urged them to uphold tenets of patriotism and to continue to be law-abiding citizens.

Meanwhile, the state coordinator of the NYSC, Mr Jimba Olawale Chris, highlighted the scheme’s positive impact on society, including education and primary healthcare, via the involvement of corps members in Community Development Services.

He emphasized that the scheme would continue to be a veritable platform for the remodelling of Nigerian youth for national development.

The NYSC was created by Decree no 24 of May 22, 1973, by the regime of the then Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, “to keep Nigeria one”. The scheme was primarily conceptualized to strengthen national cohesion and integration to create a more bonded Nigeria in all spheres.

The state coordinator added that the scheme had grown to become one of the revered Federal Government-established schemes, standing strong as a monolith amongst all platforms of unity and actively growing into an agent of unification and national transformation.
