Killings: Kogi communities raise the alarm over threat to lives, property

Published by

THE people of Bunu in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State have called on government at all levels and security agencies to, as a matter of urgency, protect their lives and property.

The residents made the call in a communiqué issued at the end of a recent stakeholders’ meeting held under the auspices of Bunu Development Association (BDA).

The communiqué, signed by the BDA president, Rev. Josiah Jemibawondo, indicated that  the people were living in fear because their lives and property were under threat.

It said that their plea became necessary following the murder of Chairman of Bunu hunters, Mr Caleb Oshe and his son, Sunday, by suspected killer Fulani herders at Suku Bunu on August 21, 2019.

The communiqué also stated that there were killings in some other communities in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Council Area of the state recently.

While condemning the alleged murder of the man and his son in their sleep and another attack on a family at Gori three days after, it urged the security agencies in the state to fish out those responsible for their killings within six months and punish them accordingly.

It read in parts: “If government fails to do this, we would conclude that it is not capable to secure our lives and property and be left with no option than to ask Fulani herdsmen who are fomenting trouble to relocate elsewhere and also ban their activities in the entire area.”

“We also expect the security agencies to patrol our major roads regularly to forestall fresh attacks and reprisals and we want each community to form vigilance groups to complement government’s efforts in securing lives and property.”

The communiqué also urged the state government to create a separate local government council area and a police station for the Bunu district in the interest of peace and security of lives and property in the area.
