KEDCO installs smart metres to check energy theft, boost revenue generation

The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), on Thursday, said that due to rampant cases of illegal connection power sources by some of its customers, it has installed Smart metres across franchises in order to check rising cases of energy theft across its franchise,

This was just as KEDCO disclosed that energy theft has continuously affected revenue generation the company supposed to realise every month and also has a negative impact on the running affairs of the organisation.

Disclosing this on Thursday in Kano, while speaking with pressmen, the Chief Commercial Officer, Alhaji Abubakar Yusuf explained that the Kano DisCo has to embrace technology to be ahead of customers engaged in the unwholesome practices.

According to him”its heart warming to let you know that we now watch the activities of our customers from the comfort of our office.”

“We have caught a number of Customers engaged in meter bypass from this office and had on several occasions dispatched our team to do the needful”.

He further disclosed that KEDCO’s major challenges of late rest on energy theft through Meter bypass, saying that vandalisation of its property has been reduced due to proactive steps by security agents.

Mr.Yusuf then promised that KEDCO would continue to partner with security agencies to sustain the tempo across franchises.

He however attributed the persistent power outage in Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa to the poor supply of power from the national grid, adding that under the current arrangement, KEDCO is entitled to 8 percent of total generation

He maintained that “Electricity is not a commodity you can hold, certainly if there are drop in generation, it would affect supply.”
