Kano NHRC records 1,030 cases of human rights violation in 2021

Published by

The Kano State Coordinator, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Shehu Abdullahi, has said that the office has recorded 1,030 complaints of alleged human rights violations from January to December 2021 in the state.

This was just as he disclosed that 95 cases recorded within the period under review were referred to other agencies for attention, noting that the other 935 fell within family matters, labour matters, law enforcement agencies among others.

According to him, 805 family-related matters were recorded during the period including parental irresponsibility, sexual and gender-based violence.

He said the office will also focus on the enactment of a family law which will go a long way in addressing family-related matters which the commission’s research described as one of the major causes of Sex and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in the state.

His words: “Consisting of domestic violence, paternity, denial and rape. The rest complaints were related to law enforcement agencies and delay in dispensation of justice.”

Barrister Abdullahi added that the Kano office under his watch will next year focus on strengthening synergy between key players on human rights advancement to have a more robust public sensitization, full implementation of laws and policies while advocating for passage of pending laws like Kano State Child Protection Law and Harmonised VAPP Act/Penal Code.
