THE Managing Director of Kano State Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (KNARDA), Dr Junaidu Yakubu Mohammad, has said that adequate sensitization and training of farmers and herders on conflict management and resolution has been described as a major pillar of addressing the incessant conflicts between them.
Dr Mohammad who is also the Chairman of the Commitee set by Governor Abdulahi Ganduje on finding ways of enhancing shelter belt in Kano State stated this during the opening ceremony of a 5-day training on Conflict Management and Resolution for Kano State Stock Routes Demarcation Commitee Members held in Kano.
According to him, the sensitization workshop was organized for the committee members so that they have the requisite knowledge of resolving conflicts.
Dr Mohammad also disclosed that the training would be stepped down to the local communites with the aim of curtailing farmers-herders conflicts.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Kano State Ministry of Agriculture, Alhaji Balarabe Karaye, said the sensitization workshop was very timely.
He said: “Conflicts between farmers and herders have drastically reduced in Kano. This was achieved by the modalities put in place by Governor Abdullahi Umar Gandujes administration in adopting conflict resolution strategy.”
He said surveillance strategy has been adopted in all local communites so that herders who migrated from other areas would be identified and monitored.
According to him, an animal grazing ground has been provided at Dansoshiya in Kiru Local Government Area, stressing that social amenities were also provided at the grazing grounds so that herders would have a befitting lifestyle.
The Chairman, Fulani Association (Kano chapter Fuldan), Malam Sani Adamu, appealed to their members to ensure that their cattle do not trespass into farmlands of farmers especially during the harvesting period.
The training was attended by participants from the 44 local Government Areas of Kano State.
