Kano govt pays N700m registration fees for 7,000 indigenous students in BUK

Kano State Government says it has paid a whopping sum of N700 million to settle the registration fee of 7,000 indigent students in Bayero University Kano (BUK).

It will be recalled that the university had recently announced astronomical increment in registration fees, which according to it, was due to rise in cost of living, occasioned by removal of fuel subsidy in the country.

Speaking on behalf of state government, the Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr Yusuf Kofarmata, expressed displeasure over the increment of the registration fees but expressed the government’s effort to intervene in a bid to save the education career of its indigent students.

According to a tweet on his verified Twitter handle, the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf said as part of efforts to cushion the economic hardship, his government had approved N700 million to settle the registration fees.

He however disclosed that the details
of the scholarship would be made available in due course.

“As part of our efforts to cushion the biting effects of our current economic reality; the Kano State Executive Council under my leadership has today, approved the release of the sum of Seven Hundred Million Naira to settle tuition fees for 7,000 students of Bayero University Kano (BUK).”
