Kaduna govt/Labour face-off: Dialogue’ll bring win-win situation for all ― NSCIA

As the Federal Government intervenes in the face-off between the Kaduna State government and Labour, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has declared that recourse to round table discussion with sincerity and patriotism will bring about a win-win solution for all the critical stakeholders.

This is even as the Apex Islamic body in the country expressed its concern that if the dispute between both parties was not swiftly resolved with tact and wisdom by all sides, it might not only compound the suffering of the already traumatised citizens of Kaduna State but also spin out of control and snowball into the unforeseen national tragedy of immense proportions.

According to a statement signed by its Director of Administration, Architect Zubairu Haruna Usman-Ugwu, entitled “Appeal for calm, restraint and speedy peaceful resolution of industrial actions in Kaduna State,” the NSCIA stated that it was disturbed by the industrial action embarked upon by the Labour in the state.

While saying that industrial actions are lawful means of seeking rights from the government, the Supreme Council stated that the dispute between the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Kaduna State government was unfortunate, inauspicious and capable of compounding the already precarious situations prevailing in Kaduna State in particular and the country in general.

“The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) under the leadership of His Eminence, Alh. Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, mni, is disturbed by the unfortunate ongoing (suspended) industrial actions in Kaduna State, the sequel to a trade dispute and subsequent hardening of positions between the State Government and Coalition of Trade Unions, which has led to the regrettable disruption of socio-economic activities of the state.

“The Council believes that, though industrial actions are lawful means of seeking rights from the government, the current strike in Kaduna State is unfortunate, inauspicious and capable of compounding the already precarious situations prevailing in Kaduna State in particular and the country in general occasioned by widespread insecurity and the COVID-19 pandemic with attendant devastating and traumatic socio-economic and life-threatening effects on the people.

“The Council is concerned that if the issue is not swiftly resolved with tact and wisdom by all sides, it might not only compound the suffering of the already traumatised citizens of Kaduna State but may also even spin out of control and snowball into an unforeseen national tragedy of immense proportions with unpleasant consequences across the state and beyond,” the Islamic body stated.

It, therefore, appealed to both the government and NLC to exercise restraints and embrace dialogue, which is described as the best approach for resolving the crisis.

“It is in the light of the above that the Council hereby appeals to all parties especially the Kaduna State Government and the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to exercise restraints and embrace negotiation as the best approach for resolving this avoidable crisis that has created tension and distraction for both parties from the lofty goals being pursued for the benefit of the citizens.

“One of the qualities of the community of believers in God is described by Allah as “those who conduct their affairs by mutual consultation…” [Qur’an 42:38]. The recourse to round table discussion with sincerity and patriotism will bring about a win-win solution for all the critical stakeholders to the relief of the general public whom both parties love to serve.

“May Almighty Allah grant both parties the patience and wisdom to incline towards a rapid peaceful resolution of this rift. Ameen,” it added.

The Federal Government, through the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, had invited both Governor Nasir El-Rufa’i and Kaduna State government officials as well as NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba with top Labour officials to a meeting today in Abuja.

The move by the Federal Government to bring both parties in the dispute to dialogue, prompted the NLC to, on Wednesday, suspended its five-day warning strike after putting socio-economic activities in the state on a standstill for three days.

The meeting between both parties is holding in Abuja.
