The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of its West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) conducted for private candidates between January and February this year.
A total of 7,166 candidates sat the examination nationwide with only 1,886 of them (representing 26.32%) obtaining credit pass and above in a minimum of five subjects including English language and mathematics.
Up to 30.11% and 32.23% of the total candidates who sat, the last two editions of the same diet obtained similar results in 2012 and 2020 respectively, an indication of a decline in the performance of candidates by 3.79% over the previous year.
The Head of National Office, WAEC Nigeria, Mr Patrick Areghan, made the announcement in a statement made available on Monday in Lagos by the Acting Head of Public Affairs Department of the organization, Mrs Moyosola Adeyegbe.
Areghan said out of the total number, who sat the examination, only 6,949 (representing 96.97% ) have their results fully processed and released while 217 candidates (representing 3.03%) have a few of their subjects still being processed due to some errors on the part of the candidates and that efforts are ongoing to rectify the errors and release those results.
He also said the results of 347 candidates (representing 4.84%) of the total number who sat the examination, were being withheld in connection with various reported cases of malpractice, adding that their cases were being investigated and the outcome would be communicated to those affected.
While also disclosing that aside from that more females than males including a total of 121 candidates with special needs sat the examination, he added that fewer numbers sat this year’s edition than that of last year, given the difference as 7,334 (representing 4. 85%).
Areghan, however, explained that despite the decline in the performance of candidates in the exam this year over the previous two years, the results should not be compared with that of the school-based exam where up to 80 per cent of the total candidates obtained similar results.
According to him, candidates in the school-based WASSCE are compelled to sit for between eight and nine subjects while private candidates in the case of the first and second series of the exam are free to sit for a number of subjects even one depending on their deficiency.
“That is why it is will not be true or fair to say that the performance in this examination has dwindled,” Areghan said, even though he did not acknowledge that some universities in Nigeria are no longer accepting a combination of ‘O’LEVEL’ results for undergraduates admissions.
Areghan, however, urged candidates who sat the exam to check their results on the WAEC’s website given as www.waecdirect.org and also apply for their certificates online through a portal.
He said WAEC would continue to conduct credible examinations even as the results of this diet were released i5 days earlier than 45 days expected after the last paper.
