Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu
An elder statesman, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, has challenged scientists across the globe to embark on intensive research to discover the real and root sources of COVID-19 and some other environmental and atmospheric deadly viruses and diseases ravaging humanity.
Chief Iwuanyanwu said this after receiving an award of Distinguished Outstanding Leadership and Meritorious Service to the Engineering Profession and Mankind in general, presented to him by the Chairman of the Imo State Chapter of the Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (NIEE), Dr Claribel Ngozi Nwogu, in his office.
Chief Iwuanyanwu who in his early days discovered the Asphaltic Concrete Pavement being used all over the country, said that Environmental Engineers had greater challenges and lots of work to do to save humanity from viruses and diseases which are ravaging society globally.
The media magnet, who said that at the, everybody “is talking of environmental degradation”, maintained that the onus lies engineers to find a lasting solution to it.
“Ebola, HIV, Cholera and COVID19 are said to be caused by environmental degradation and all are hazardous to human existence,” Chief Iwuanyanwu said.
Chief Iwuanyanwu recalled that when God created the Universe, He handed the world over to mankind to conquer, develop, inhabit, make his wealth and be in charge of everything in it.
He maintained that engineers were called by nature to ensure not only a healthy environment but healthy habitation by humanity, describing Environmental Engineering as a very important aspect of their profession.
The former PDP Board of Trustee member, commended the Chairman of the Institute Mrs Ngozi Claribel Nwogu, for her new position, eloquence, doggedness and determination to improve the environmental aesthetics of the State.
Iwuanyanwu appealed that all hands must be at work to ensure healthy co-habitation among all ethnic groups in the land.
Earlier in her address, the Imo State Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Environmental Engineers, Mrs Ngozi Nwogu, said they came to honour one of their “foremost resourceful and most highly respected senior professional Engr Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu for his unqualifiable numerous outstanding Distinguished Leadership and meritorious services to their profession and humanity in general.”
Nwogu also during the visit announced the institution of Engr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu Annual Environmental Engineering Innovation Competition for students in the universities and essay contest for secondary schools.
She said that the institution of the annual competitions is in recognition of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu’s numerous contributions to the growth and development of the engineering profession in Nigeria and the African continent as well as his love for youth empowerment and human capital development.
Mrs Nwogu noted that environmental engineers were major key players in restoring the environmental ecosystem in the State and Nigeria at large, adding that the NIEE is a division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, established to provide solutions to environmental issues by employing current and emerging I technologies, equipment and procedures.
She solicited assistance to enable them to tackle some of their pressing duties.
