Ask the Doctor

Is this toilet disease?

Published by

I am a 17-year-old secondary school student in boarding house. Two weeks after our resumption from holidays, I noticed a smelly discharge from my private part. Even though I am not a virgin, I suspect that I must have caught the infection from our school toilet. I have used a lot of medications without any improvement. Kindly advise me on what to do.

ANSWER.

The possibility of contracting a disease from a toilet seat is theoretically possible but extremely unlikely.

Be that as it may, one can be at risk of contracting infectious diseases (faeco-oral diseases) from dirty toilets not because of sitting on dirty toilet seats but from touching toilet surfaces with one’s hands which can subsequently be used to contaminate other products we may take in, leading to infection. I don’t think that your current dilemma came from the toilet. To be on the safe side, I will advise that you go for a Vaginal Swab Test which will determine the kind of infection and the medication that can clear it. Since you are also sexually active, it will be equally advisable for you to treat your previous sexual contacts.
