Published by

The efforts of the new Inspector General of Police, IGP’, Usman Alkali Baba to end incessant attacks on Police and security formations in the Eastern parts of the country paid off on Saturday as the Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and their counterparts from the Nigerian Army and Department of State Services (DSS) in a joint operation stormed the operational headquarters of Insurgents (IPOB militias) in Awomama Village Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State, killed seven including their Commander.

Competent security sources told Tribune Online that during the coordinated operation by the security forces the overall commander of the insurgents in the South-East popularly known as Ikonso Commander and six other armed fighters of the insurgent group were neutralised.

According to the source, “the Insurgents are responsible for the attack on the Imo State Police Headquarters and the Headquarters of the Nigerian Correctional Service on 5th April, this year.

“They have also carried out series of calculated, violent attacks on security personnel and formations in the South East and South-South of the country.

Narrating how the operation was carried out, the source said, “as the security forces approached the base of the insurgents, they came under rapid fire from the group. In a bold and clinical response, the joint security forces fought back gallantly.

“The Commander Ikonso, who is popularly known as the Vice President-designate as well as the coordinator of all the militia operations of the group was neutralized along with other six fighters.

“He was said to be the mastermind and coordinator of the attack on the Imo Police Headquarters and several other attacks on security and military personnel and facilities.

A senior Police Officer told the Sunday Tribune that the operation was part of a deliberate effort by the Nigeria Police Force and other security forces to quell the activities of insurgents in Imo State and other States of the South East and South-South region of the country.

According to him, “after the fierce gun battle, the security team recovered the remains of Ikonso Commander and the six of his fighters while Several sophisticated weapons including six AK47 rifles, hundreds of ammunition of different caliber and lots of charms including bullet Proof charms were recovered from the insurgents.

Though the Force Public Relations Officer, FPRO, Frank Mba, a Commissioner of Police, CP, could not be immediately reached for confirmation, a Senior Police Officer confirmed the story under anonymity saying, “that’s good news, we just heard of it at the Force Headquarters here in Abuja, when the headquarters is fully briefed, the FPRO will brief you the Press about the Successful Operations.

“All I can I can tell you now is that presently, three policemen and one army officer are receiving treatment having sustained serious bullet injuries during an exchange of gunfire with the insurgents.”
