Worried by the rising cases of invasion of schools and abduction of students, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) high command has concluded plans for the deployment of the newly established crack female squad to protect schools in some volatile states of the federation.
Commandant-General of NSCDC, Dr Ahmed Audi, speaking at the special parade, simulation and unveiling of the new Civil Defence Female Squad on Monday in Abuja, said the deployment of the officers was part of the implementation of the Federal Government Safe School Initiative.
The Female squad put together by the Commandant-General within 100 days in office, were subjected to four weeks of rigorous training at the Civil Defence College in Katsina State.
“With the recent Government proposed Safe School Initiative, the Corps made bold to express readiness to confront kidnapping and banditry activities among others within and around Schools environments,” he said.
He, however, noted that the Corps would commence with the deployment of the first set of the female squad to schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Katsina and subsequently extend their operations to other states of the Federation.
Audi charged the special squad to adhere strictly to the rules of engagement in the discharge of their duties, warning that there should be no accidental discharge in line with the slogan of NSCDC.
He lamented that the country is faced with enormous security challenges occasioned by Boko Haram insurgency, kidnappings, banditry, armed robbery, malicious attacks and killings, farmers/herders crisis and all manner of violence, among others.
The CG observed that credible intelligence remains the only way to win the asymptomatic war against the bandits and insurgency, calling on the officers and men of the Corps to work in synergy with other security agencies in the country for intelligence sharing.
He said: “My heart goes to all the families who have been directly or indirectly affected by the negative impacts of these insurgencies which are orchestrated by some faceless criminal syndicates with the intention to destabilize the peaceful co-existence of the people as a nation.
“I wish to reiterate that, President Muhammadu Buhari, is concerned about the lives and well-being of Nigerians and foreigners in our nation and will continue to do everything possible to protect lives, properties and prevent avoidable deaths in the nation.
“Due to the unprovoked and mindless attacks which have led to the loss of lives and left in its trail gory image of the threat terrorism now poses to the peace and security of the nation and safety of our citizens. I was propelled upon the assumption of the duty to hasten efforts to build a credible and proactive security organization that is knowledge-driven, dogged and committed to its responsibility.
“That driving force and initiative brought about the establishment of the first set of the female squad. This is in keeping with my belief that women can make and been making valuable contributions to nation-building in this Country.
“The quest for security stability in our country continue to remain a holy grail with ceaseless and unabated cases of banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, insurgency, terrorism among others. All these have continued to threaten our country’s cohesion, stability and territorial integrity.
“The Civil Defence Female Squad will definitely complement the efforts of their male counterparts and also work together with sister agencies,” he said.
