Insecurity: Nigerian Society of Engineers urges govt to focus on deploying advanced technology

In the nation’s fight against insecurity, the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Oluyole branch, has urged the Federal Government to focus more on the deployment of advanced technology.

Especially, the NSE symposium held at First Technical University, Ibadan, on Wednesday, called for the huge deployment of drones, scanners, software for the detection of hideouts of kidnappers and bandits, smuggled ammunition in vehicles, detection of Improvised Explosive Devices and detection of the planned ambush of farmers or soldiers.

Leading the charge at the symposium, Chief Executive Officer, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria, Dr Olusola Ayoola said the nation must compete with China, in terms of technology, to efficiently tackle crimes and criminality.

Ayoola also urged the nation’s security forces to deploy more encrypted communication to prevent information about its activities from leaking into the hands of criminally-minded elements.

Aside from reliance on government, Ayoola also charged budding engineers to come up with their own innovations, in their little spaces, and search for knowledge beyond even academia.

Founder, Think Electric Africa Initiative, Mr Olukokun Tolulope stressed that technology was crucial to make security agencies more reactive rather than usually being reactive to crisis situations.

He however argued that importing technology was not enough, charging Nigerians to also build technologies and innovations that address the nation’s peculiarities.

Olukokun also demanded practical-based and entrepreneurial education for the nation to have sustainable development.

Chairman, NSE, Oluyole branch, Mr Abdulrasaq Jimoh, in his remarks, charged students to seek valuable experience and hands-on skills, while in school so that they are well equipped at graduation.

Abdulrasaq also charged the youths to see themselves as instruments of social change and engage with experts to gain requisite knowledge.

Vice-Chancellor, First Technical University, Professor Ayobami Salami represented by Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Professor Olufemi Koya, said the institution focused on industry immersion for its graduates to fit the expectations of today’s society.

Other speakers to include Mr Idowu Ayoade of the department of Mechatronics Engineering and Dr Oluseyi Adeyemi harped on the need for security agencies to deploy remote sensing technology and safety technology in their operations.

They also noted the need for interdisciplinary collaboration in the fight against insecurity and that government should commit more funds into research.

During a courtesy call before the event, Vice-Chancellor, First Technical University, Professor Ayobami Salami assured of the institution constantly opening its doors to meaningful partnerships and collaboration with the NSE and other bodies.

Prior to Wednesday’s event, the branch, as part of its weeklong event, had held a virtual public lecture, visitation to hospital and orphanage and a church thanksgiving.
