The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday said seven political parties have been cleared to participate in next Saturday by-election into the Akure North/Akure South federal constituency seat in the House of Representatives.
The Ondo Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Rufus Akeju, who disclosed this during a press briefing in Akure, the state capital, listed the political parties to include Accord Party, (AP) African Democratic Party, (ADP) All Progressives Congress (APC), All Peoples Party, (APP) National Redemption Movement,(NRM) Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Akeju said all the candidates seven candidates presented by the political parties had been cleared for the election.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner said sensitive materials would be distributed on Thursday, February 24 while he disclosed that new eligible voters who got registered in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration in June 2021 till date would not be able to vote during the next Saturday’s bye-election because data from the exercise has not been upgraded
He explained that the Biometric Voter Authentication System (BVAS) would be deployed for the bye-election and that results from the polling units would be transmitted to the Results Viewing portal in real-time.
The Ondo REC stated that the election would hold in 408 polling units and listed registered voters in the Akure federal constituency to be 365,088.
He, however, assured that adequate security would be provided to stall any act of violence during the conduct of the poll.
He said, “I don’t conduct inconclusive elections. We will follow the rules. Adequate security will be provided.
“Whoever snatch ballot boxes will be snatched and taken to jail. All logistics will be provided. All political parties are to abide by laid down rules and regulation for peace to reign.”
