Corruption has become Nigeria’s greatest induing and Nigerians now see corruption as a norm; something that cannot be eradicated. Corruption in Nigeria is so endemic that Nigerian youths now take it as a legal business. For many youths, cybercrime is a source of livelihood and they openly flaunt the trade and use their ill-gotten wealth to harrass others while some greedy elders encourage them.
Values are lost in the Nigerian society and the people with expensive material things are the ones that people respect in the society. As a result, there is little or no value placed on education and those that want to do the right thing are constantly harrassed and intimidated physically and materially as people of no worth in the society.
And due to the general acceptance and rot in the society, many youths do not see anything wrong in cyber crime, ritual and other vices again as long as it brings in money.
Until the Nigerian society works at putting the right values in place and focus is shifted from material acquisition and unexplainable wealth, the future of the country will continue to be at stake as the society will constantly be under the threat of crime and a wasted youth generation.
Government should provide job opportunities for the unemployed and give free education to the underprivileged in the society.
Peace Oyetade, Ibadan.
