Ijero Day: Owa-Ajero offers panacea for economic recession

THE current economic crisis in the country is not peculiar to the nation as the phenomenon has assumed a global dimension.

This was the submission of the Owa-Ajero of Ijero-Ekiti, Oba Joseph Adebayo Adewole Arojoye II, in his palace on Tuesday during an interview preparatory to the 2016 Ijero Day slated for October 8.

While noting that the nation’s economy was buoyant during the oil boom era, the traditional ruler observed that the nation is witnessing another phase of its socio-economic history which nigerians should consider as normal as nothing is static.

He, however, stated that the recession would soon be a thing of the past..

“Such occurrences are bound to happen. It is not uncommon in the life of a nation. It is not the fault of anybody. It even happens in the lives of individuals. We should not despair as it will soon end but we need to learn from it,” he said.

On high rate of unemployment in the country, he expressed concern that successive governments had not been abel to adquately address the situation as the turnout of youths from higher institutions on yearly bases was very high.

He, however, advised the incumbent administration to pursue its agriculture policy vigorously, adding that government at all levels need to direct attention towards revamping the sector to replace oil as the country’s mainstay while youths needed to be encouraged to channel their energy towards the sector.

He said agriculture is capable of solving the current economic crisis if vigorously pursued.

On the proposed sale of national assets by the Federal Government to augment revenue as a way out of the economic recession, the traditional ruler said Nigerians are skeptical about it because when the Federal Governent privatised the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) and the NITEL, the economic situation remaiend the same.

He, however, said that the 2016 Ijero Day celebration will focus on the reunification of the people of the community as well as development programmes.
