Leaders of the South-West Security Stakeholders Group (SSSG), on Thursday, condemned the nocturnal invasion of Soka, Ibadan home of Chief Sunday Adeyemo Igboho popularly Sunday Igboho, saying the attack truly showed that Nigeria’s democracy is in danger, even as the group called for the release of the 13 aides of the Yoruba activist detained during last week attack.
The group gave this position in a statement by its spokesperson, Mr Adewole Ireti, after its emergency and strategic meeting held at the Omole Phase 2, Lagos residence of Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, saying it was most unfortunate that Sunday Igboho’s residence could be invaded by men of Directorate of State Services (DSS) in such a cruel manner that also led to the death of eight persons, declaring: “It is purely a dangerous signal to our democracy.”
SSSG, while reviewing the security situation in the South-West, bemoaned the recent killings of over 50 people in the Igangan area of Oyo State, maintaining that it would not relent in its efforts in securing the zone against criminal Fulani herdsmen.
“It is most unfortunate that Sunday Igboho could be attacked in such a cruel manner that also led to the death of eight persons. It is purely a dangerous signal to our democracy,
“How on earth can the FG hail the crude attack by the DSS? It is an infringement on his rights as a person. It is also an indication that the nation is drifting towards a tailspin.
“As as a group that is determined to secure the South-West region, we would not fold our arms and allow the criminal Fulani herdsmen to overrun our communities. We would also not relent in our efforts in ensuring that the South-West is safe for all and sundry,” the group assured.
SSSG, however, urged prominent Yoruba leaders, including all the traditional rulers in the South-West and other eminent Yoruba sons and daughters to rally Igboho and not to leave him alone to suffer injustice against the Yoruba race.
The group also appealed to the Federal Government to allow Igboho to enjoy his liberty, saying declaring him wanted could be likened to the declaration of war against Yoruba nation agitators.
Those in attendance at the meeting include; the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Adams; an Afenifere chieftain, Mogaji Gboyega Adejumo, who represented the leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural group at the meeting and top leaders of SSSG made up of Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Agbekoya, vigilante, hunters, and Community Security Awareness Initiatives Corps of Nigeria (COMSAIC).
