NO fewer than 25 students have been trained in Adire making at an exhibition and award presentation organised on Monday by the National Commission for Museums and Monument (NCMM) at Aleshinloye, Ibadan.
The coordinator of the project, Caroline Oluyemi said the group wanted to make people to be self-reliant and later become employers of labour.
Oluyemi, at the event tagged “Adire making for capacity building 2022” said: “We want to engage people through this capacity building and also bring them closer to the museum as part of our heritage.”
She implored the participants not to play with what they have learnt and ensure that their efforts in course of the training were not in vain.
Speaking to the Nigerian Tribune, Oluyemi explained how tedious the programme was but advised participants not to relent, just as she said that the programme would be of their benefit in future. She said: “We are going to
form a cooperative society for the participants in order to assist them to kickstart their Adire business.”
Speaking at the programme, Prince Sikiru Adedoyin and Mrs Pamela Otuka commended the project coordinator and also restated the museum’s interest in the proiect.
While highlighting the importance of skills acquisition, Otuka said that she came from Lagos, adding that the people living in Lagos value skills acquisition, adding, “I’m happy that you have chosen a career that would be useful for you in life.”
The chairman of the event Mr Samson Adetunji, a principal lecturer of the Department of Fine Arts and Design from Polytechnic
Ibadan, charged the students on personal behaviour and asked that they should always remember the children of whom they are.
“Always carry out your responsibilities to the best of your ability and enjoy what you do at all time. I want to assure you that the higher ground is yours,” Adetunji said.
Speaking on behalf of their colleagues, Ajilore King and Tijani Abdulrasheed said they learnt a lot in the course of the training and they were grateful to the coordinator for the knowledge they have acquired.
