I had experience with sickle cell anaemia  ― Dame Okowa

Intending couples have been advised not to jeopardize their future by accepting false genotype before going into marriage.

According to a Consultant paediatrician at the Federal Medical Center, Asaba, Dr Hyginus Opara, several couples have fallen victims of false laboratory declaration of their blood group.

Speaking in an interview at this year World Sickle Cell Day celebration organised by the founder of 05 Initiative and wife of Delta State governor, Dame Edith Okowa in Asaba, the consultant said some intending couples had compromised to accept faulty genotype results because of infatuation only to suffer the consequences later in their life.

The celebration of the program was unique as it low keyed.

Dr Opara who is one of the doctors engaged by 05 Initiatives to manage Sickle cell issues advised couples to do proper tests on their genotype to avoid being traumatized by their children in future.

Earlier, Dame Okoh in an interview disclosed that 05 Initiative had established 13 sickle cell clinics in 13 local government areas of the state with a referral centre in Asaba while plans were on to extend same to the remaining 12 council areas.

The clinics, she said, were categorized into first, second and third tiers adding that the second tier clinics located in Agbor, Kwale, Sapele, Ughelli, Warri and Oleh which can refer cases to the referral centre (third tier) in the state capital.

The Delta first lady said she had experience with a sickle cell which informed her passion to reach the world with the message of hope for sufferers.

“I have had experience with sickle cell anaemia so I told my God that I will go and preach this gospel that people must know their genotype before going into marriage.”

She expressed appreciation to various donors in the fight against sickle cell and other programs of a pet project.
