Talk of a DJ that has done well for himself and raised his game in the music industry to heights that only a few can match, the name that comes to mind is DJ Consequence. The moniker, DJ Consequence, has been around for a long time, but the young man, whose craft has taken him across continents, always tries to avoid media attention and would rather focus on pushing his career beyond boundaries. Days back, SEGUN ADEBAYO met with the man Akeredolu Precious Pelumi, who calls himself the Vibes Machine and presents excerpts of their conversation.
DJ Consequence has been around for a long time and doing his thing. What has kept you long in the game till now?
I owe everything I am now and what I would be to God, excellence and creativity. You cannot amount to anything in life if you don’t recognise the God factor in your life. God comes first because He gave you the grace and strength to be whoever you chose to be in life. Secondly, there is also the place of excellence. In everything I do, I strive to achieve excellent result. I always set high target for myself so that I can work hard to achieve something great and excellent. There is also the place of creativity, which must have been deposited in one by God. It is not enough for one to be talented or gifted; it must be well harnessed and maximised to attain maximum satisfaction. From the moment I stepped into the game, I knew what I wanted to achieve with my career and I have always been a fan of doing things in the best and most unique ways. That being said, I can’t deny that God has been good to me too. He has given me so much to be thankful for.
Looking back at the journey so far, what would you say about your career and the music industry?
From the look of things, I can tell you that it has been a fun ride. I have encountered many challenges and went through some difficult times, but when I look at the good moments that I have had, I think the bad moments I went through were worth it because they helped me to grow and learn. Will I be willing to trade this journey for anything? I don’t wish to. I am happy with my life and how things have turned out for me.
Why would anybody choose to be called DJ Consequence?
Well, I think that is because this brand has worked so hard, continuously, to push beyond the normal and break boundaries. The brand has become successful and people love it. It is not about the name, again, but how the brand has emerged to be one of the hottest on the African continent and beyond. It has become something everyone would love to associate with.
What exactly brought about the name?
It’s a very funny story. I would reveal that some other time, but certainly not now and not today.
You have been in the industry for about a decade, but it seems you are underrated. What’s your take on this?
I don’t think I am underrated. It is the wrong choice of word to say I am underrated because I am not. I think the right word is ‘unexplored’. People don’t really know my talents and what I am capable of doing. That’s why I’m here to show and preach the gospel: the gospel of the ‘vibes’. The gospel of showing the world that the man Consequence is more than what they know; people should wait for the real deal.
You have worked with many A list artistes over the years; how would you describe the journey?
I have learnt quite a lot of lessons working with many of them. Truth be told, it has been full of lessons, some good and some very surprising experiences.
We hardly hear about your name unlike names like Neptune, Lambo, Spinall and others. How have you been coping with not getting the full recognition your career deserve?
Let me express the feeling this way, we make money with audio, but we don’t make audio-money. I am sure we know what that means. So, it doesn’t depend on whether or not people think I am out there, but as long as I keep developing my brand and craft. I really don’t pay attention to what people feel. I just want to keep getting better, creating unforgettable moments with my career and securing my future. That, for me, is success.
They also call you the Vibes’ Machine; what does that mean?
Vibes, literally, are energy. Machines are things that are very efficient. So, if you fuse both words, it means I efficiently control the energy of a party to the fullest.
You have been on tour for a long time now. Why do you focus on foreign countries rather than building from home?
Okay, let me just say that I am just spreading the vibes beyond the motherland. It’s a good way of showing love to everyone and also getting my brand out there. The brand is known at home and I don’t take it for granted but we have to reach out and take the game to the people outside of this space, so that we can put our brand out there. Home or abroad, the goal is to keep spreading love and giving the brand international face and recognition.
What does it cost you as a DJ to go on these tours?
That is a funny question, but you will have to discuss this with my manager. He would be in the best position to answer you.
Do you really think your brand is big enough to be taken on such tours?
The truth is that time and records will tell. I trust God and my team, so that’s very likely. I am not worried.
Tell us about your UK tour that has been the talk of the town for days now?
It has really been great. I am at a loss for words. It felt like I was home with my people. U.K was very welcoming and I enjoyed every moment there. I had a great time with the people and they showed me real and genuine love. I can’t wait to do this again.
How has life been as a DJ?
It has been like a movie.
What kind of movie?
A movie that has had its highs and lows, good moments and trying moments. But then, it’s something I won’t trade for anything in life.
We see many Djs featuring acts and doing collaboration. You have done some in the past but we have not heard much from you. When are we hearing from you again?
You will hear from me soon. Very soon.
How would you rate yourself among other top Djs in Nigeria?
I don’t like to rate myself. I always leave that to my fans to decide what they think about me and my career.
What are your plans to remain relevant for another 10 years?
You can call me the silent shooter. I don’t want to disclose my plans for now. When it happens, people will see. But trust me, everything looks good and secured.
