When Ismail Aliyu was offered admission to study Political Science at Usmanu Dandiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), in 2017, he never considered graduating with first class honors, perhaps because he had been told no one had ever bagged the honor from the political science department.
His department was established two years after the university was established in 1975, but no student has ever received a first-class honor from the department.
Ismail Aliyu, a native of Etsuworu in Niger State’s Lavun Local Government Area and a graduating student in the 2020/2021 academic session, broke the 46-year-old jinx with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.53.
When Aliyu realised his 100-level CGPA was 4.63, a ray of hope flashed through his mind. He could smell the odor of breaking the record at this point.
He said, “I started developing an interest in graduating with first-class honors when I saw my 100-level results.”
Meanwhile, Aliyu’s CGPA suffered a slight frustration and dropped to 4.58 in his second year at the university. Also, at the 300 level, he maintained an exact 4.58 and eventually ended up with a CGPA of 4.53.
“Despite the difficulties, challenges, and decrease in my CGPA from 100-level, I have never felt discouraged. I never engaged in ‘Morocco’ throughout my stay on Campus.”
Aliyu, who spent nothing less than four hours reading in a day, told this reporter that he had never engaged in ‘Morroco’ — a common lingo for campus relationship, by students of the university.
“I have never been involved in any relationship while I was on campus. I was alone in that aspect.”
Meanwhile, Aliyu said he had never recorded a carryover throughout his 4-year degree at the university.
“I only had a missing grade in GST 106, and it was later rectified a week later, and glory be to almighty Allah that I broke a 46-year record.”
