The Catholic Diocese of Benin City, Edo State, has empowered 30 youths from six communities in Orhionmwon and Ikpoba- Ohka Local Government Areas of Edo State.
The 30 youths were trained in five core areas like fashion designing, hair dressing, make-up artists, electricians and tiling. After which they were given starter parks and 60,000 each.
Speaking during the presentation, the Arch Bishop of Benin Arch Diocese, Arch Bishop Augustine Akubeze, represented by very Rev Fr Michael Oyanoafoh, said he was pleased to witness the closing ceremony of the project, Sustainable Measure Against Trafficking in Persons(SMART-P).
He added that the project started in 2018 with the aims of stemming the tide of human trafficking and irregular migration.
Fr Oyanoafoh said the programme faced major challenges like transportation, as accessing the communities was a difficult task as there were no vehicles and the community participation was not encouraging, adding that some of the communities withdrew from the project during the screening of beneficiaries.
He advised the beneficiaries to take advantage of the programme to change their lives.
The Edo State Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, gave the beneficiaries an additional 50,000 each as support and advised them to work hard in other to excel in their chosen fields, adding that patience, determination, perseverance, discipline and prayerfulness remained the ingredients that drive human beings to uncommon successes.
Shaibu added that as a young man, he had vowed not to work for anybody, but at some point he began to work, but, however, was not satisfied with that work and he resigned.
Speaking, one of the beneficiaries, Esther Peters, (19) who was trained in fashion designing, said she thanked the Catholic Church for the training and the empowerment, adding that she was happy to have benefited from the project.
Also, responding Victor Amenaghwan, 26, who was trained as an electrician, said he could not hide his feeling for the Catholic Church for giving him such opportunity.
He said, all his days as an apprentice,he did not see the kind of tools given to him, and pledged to work hard.
