How I stay relevant in Nigeria’s competitive music industry ― De-Loonie

Nigerian musician Okere Darington, profoundly known by his stage name De-Loonie, has disclosed how he maintains relevance in the Nigerian music industry.

The music industry, being a very competitive ground, has seen a lot of musicians fall off their peak stage because they couldn’t keep up with the constant changes. As some artists go out of the limelight, even more, attain spotlight.

De-Loonie, a talented musician who has been in the industry for over a decade, noted that to stay afloat in the music industry, the ability for musicians to adapt to change is very important.

The enviable singer disclosed the sounds are always not constant, and if a musician cannot up his or her game as and when due, such musician would go into extinction.

“Adapting to change, the change of the sound even though my content remains the same and fusing my music style with other musicians with a wide range of fans,” he said.

De-Loonie added that consistency, confidence and originality are important qualities of an excellent musician while discussing how he has been handling a college degree, other jobs and businesses with music.

In his words: “I have been doing music professionally for over 10 years now and I can say that being consistent has been a significant challenge, especially combining it with a college degree and mini-jobs and businesses to survive in a system that hasn’t been too fair.

“In my journey so far, I learned that consistency and confidence are everything. I learnt also that originality and uniqueness always stand out and wonderful music with relatable lyrics stays evergreen.

“I also learned that humility is very important as to pay regard to the pioneers and the ancestors of the game but not lose your self-esteem. I’ve learned to be proud of my content and be humble to those who have made it to the top and appreciate those still coming up.”
