How foundation offered free surgeries in Ibadan

As part of efforts to ensure the masses get access to medical care and fill the vacuum in the medical access, over 100 people recently got access to free medical treatment through the Ibadan Surgical Mega Outreach, powered by an organisation, Creating Healthy Communities and Kinship Medical Mission Incorporated, popularly called CHECK medical mission.

The mission which took place at the Pozo Specialist Hospital at Orita Challenge area in Ibadan was supervised by 10 experienced surgeons, five of whom were from the University College Hospital.

At the end of the mission, over 100 people got medical assistance and 38 surgeries were carried out on ailments like hernia in adults and children, appendicitis, fibroids, breast lumps, hydrocele, ganglion and undistended testis among other surgical procedures.

Speaking on the purpose of the medical outreach, the president of the mission, Dr Adeleye Babarinsa, stated that the outreach was in line with the mission of his organisation to create healthier communities and kinships based on the belief that one basic way to achieve its goals is to create opportunities for people to learn about their individual and community health, and learn skills to make informed decisions about their health.

“Over the years, we have worked to ensure that while we reach out to communities through our medical outreaches comprising free consultations, treatments and surgeries; we empower them to become more knowledgeable about their health and henceforth improve their health.

“This is mainly part of our commitment to provide free medical services to the poor and the underprivileged in Oyo State, CHECK decided to organise the free surgical outreach for the residents of Ibadan to help in ensuring good health for the people, especially those who cannot afford it. We had 10 experienced surgeons, dentists, several nurses, anesthetist technicians, laboratory scientists and several support staff and we attended to over 40 surgical clients who benefited from the free surgical outreaches,” Dr Babarinsa stated.

The guest of honour at the surgical outreach was the Onpetu of Ijeruland, Oba Sunday Oladapo Oyediran, who is also the grand patron of the organisation. In his address at the opening of the mission, Oba Oyediran lauded the initiative and the commitment of the organisation towards helping others, especially the underprivileged in the society, encouraging the great initiative of the team.

Oba Oyediran further promised to continually support the team in her quest to create a healthier nation and also announced that henceforth, in collaboration with the CHECK mission management, he will also be hosting the team in the annual Onpetu Mega Medical Outreach in November for a medical outreach that will provide a wide range of medical services, including general consultation, physiotherapy, laboratory tests, distribution of eye glasses including eye, dental and general surgeries.

There was also a goodwill message from one of the patrons of the mission, the Aare of Ofikiland, Oba Gbenga Adeoye Adigun, who was unavoidably absent due to official duties. In his message, he prayed for the sustenance of the organization and the success of the outreach, reiterating that he will always be available to support the mission in touching lives, creating a healthier community and making a difference.

Dr. Babarinsa, in his closing remarks thanked all stakeholders and medical personnel that contributed to the success of the outreach. He further appreciated all the organisation’s partners home and abroad who donated generously towards the success of the programme and the volunteers for a job well done.

While appreciating God for the opportunity and divine guidance that has helped in making the outreach a tremendous success, he encouraged philanthropist in the society and well meaning Nigerians to support the great work the organisation in order to help it do more and reach more people especially in the underserved communities which is the focus of the organisation.

Dr Babarinsa reiterated that the issue of access to health care and creating a healthy environment cannot be left to government alone, calling on others to join hands and help develop a healthy society.
