Honey is a natural sweet fluid made by honeybees using the nectar of flowering plant. It contains sugar as well as a mix of amino acids, vitamins, minerals, iron, zinc and antioxidants.
Aside being used as a natural sweetener, honey has other effective components that are anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial making it a natural household recipe to treat minor ailments like coughs and treat burns or promote wound healing.
It is a product that has several potential health benefits especially in terms of home remedies and alternative medicine treatments.
Honey contains important bioactive plant compounds and antioxidants like flavonoids and phenolic acids that help to neutralise reactive oxygen species (ROS) which can build up in cells and cause damage in the body, .
Honey is good for blood sugar levels; although honey raises blood sugar level just like other types of sugar, the antioxidants it contains may help protect against metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.
Honey may increase adiponectin levels, a hormone that reduces inflammation and improves blood sugar regulation. There’s also evidence that daily honey intake may improve fasting blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.
However, while honey may be slightly better than refined sugar for people with diabetes, people should consume it in moderation
Honey may also help prevent heart disease by lowering blood pressure, improve blood fat levels, regulate heartbeat, and prevent the death of healthy cells to improve your heart function and health
Honey promotes burn and wound healing and is particularly effective for diabetes-related foot ulcers.
It helps to suppress cough in children
Coughing is a common problem for children with upper respiratory infections. These infections can affect sleep and quality of life for children and parents. Research has shown that honey appears more effective than diphenhydramine for cough symptoms. It may also help reduce cough duration
However, never give honey to children under one year of age due to the risk of botulism.
It is however important to note that eating large quantities of honey, especially consistently over a long period, can contribute to weight gain and increase the risk of diseases like type 2 diabetes or heart disease
Studies further suggest that honey might offer antidepressant, anticonvulsant, anti-anxiety benefits and help prevent memory disorders.
