Hold FG responsible if we go on strike, ASUU warns

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Nsukka zone said that the way the Federal government is handling the negotiation with the union shows that government is interested in pushing the union to embark on strike.

The Zonal Coordinator, Raphael Amokaha stated this at the meeting held at Benue State University, Makurdi on Thursday.

Nsukka’s zonal coordinator lamented that the manner federal government was handling the negotiation with the union shows there was no seriousness on the part of the federal government.

He said that the federal government has not shown seriousness towards fulfilling its part of the agreement in 2009.

Amokaha said that with several meetings held between 2020 and now to address the issue, the federal government had displayed a lackadaisical attitude to address all the agreements reached.

He warned that if things are not handled well, the union might be forced to embark on strike.

Amokaha said, “It seems it is the intention of government that we should threaten or go on strike for the implementation of every item in the Memorandum of Action.

“In view of lethargic cum insincere approach by government to the peaceable resolution of this matter, the union will not be inclined to this piecemeal implementation of the MOA any longer.

“We can on ASUU NEC to insist on the satisfactory implementation of the MOA as a whole, especially, the completion and signing of the renegotiated 2009 agreement.”
