Fresh off his recognition as the CEO of the year at the 2021 African Banker Award, Access Bank’s Chief Executive Officer, Herbert Wigwe, has been recognised yet again as the Best African Banking CEO at the 2021 International Banker Awards.
Recognised for his visionary leadership in sustainably positioning Access Bank in new markets despite the drawbacks posed by the pandemic, Wigwe has successfully championed the bank’s cultural, digital and technological transformation, and placed it firmly on its way to achieving its vision to become Africa’s gateway to the world.
Over the past 12 months, Wigwe has driven the bank to revolutionise its business and set standards for the industry locally and globally.
This is evident in the Bank’s successes across diverse areas of its business, including; sustained growth in financial performance, strategic initiatives showcasing institutional and industrial impact, driving industry innovation leveraging technology, sustainability, and their exemplary COVID-19 response and support to clients and customers.
Accepting the award, Wigwe said the bank is positioned to become Africa’s gateway to the world by providing cutting-edge digital payment solutions across the continent.
According to him: “This award recognises the collective effort of the Access Bank team in revolutionising the payment and banking landscape in Africa.
“We are able to achieve this much because of our collective efforts and commitment. While I am gladdened by our achievements, there is more work to be done.
“We are currently working towards having subsidiaries across 22 countries over the next five years, with strategic plans to be present in all the major trade corridors in the African continent.
“Building on our successful expansion into Kenya, South Africa and Cameroon, we will also be making entries into Angola and Mozambique. By 2023, Access Bank will have consolidated its position as Africa’s gateway to the world with about 100 million customers in Nigeria and an additional 20 million customers across our African subsidiaries,” he continued.
The International Banker Awards is a respected industry event, celebrating and recognising top-ranking individuals and organisations setting new benchmarks for performance and pushing the boundaries within the financial industry.
