Heavy rainfall renders many homeless in Oro, Kwara

Published by

Some residents of Oro, Iludun Oro and Esie in the Irepodun local government area of Kwara State have been rendered homeless as heavy rainfall accompanied by windstorm destroyed houses in the ancient communities on Tuesday.

It is recalled that Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq had visited the same Oro town during the early part of Tuesday to sympathize with victims of fire disaster which razed 30 shops in the Oro central market, while the downpour disaster happened barely 24 hours after the inferno.

Tribune Online gathered that the storm also fell electric poles thus throwing the entire communities into total darkness.

A resident of the town said that the rain started around 3 pm and did not last up to an hour, yet caused much havoc.

Amongst the areas affected in Oro town include Saint Andrew Church, Abegun compound, Balogun square etc.

It was also gathered that a house belonging to one Hon. Shina Afolabi roofed a day earlier, was completely blown off by the rampaging storm.

Speaking on the development, the zonal spokesperson, Oro community development association, Mr. Niyi Adekanye, said “the whole incident has thrown the entire Oro and its environs into total darkness. We are, therefore, appealing to the state government to come to our rescue. What is most devastating is that a man known as Hon. Shina Afolabi in Oro only Tuesday this week completed the roofing of his house. The rain with its storms came and blew the
entire roof off.

“The damage done to us is almost incalculable. We are, therefore, appealing to the state government and public-spirited individuals to come to our aid. We have been in darkness since the store destroyed electric poles and cables.”
