He spends his money on liquor, gets drunk instead of training our children in school —Wife

A woman, Yetunde Babalola, recently told Oja Oba/ Mapo Court C Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, she was tired of her marriage and wanted divorce.

Yetunde, who dragged her husband, Waidi Babalola to court, accused him of irresponsibility.

The plaintiff explained that she was the one responsible for the running of the home and the training of their children in school.

The plaintiff added that the defendant was a drunk and a brute. According to her, he beats her to a pulp any time he was drunk.

Yetunde told the court she has had enough of her husband’s maltreatment of her.

She, therefore, pleaded that it put an end to their relationship.

Waidi acceded to divorce explaining that Yetunde was domineering in nature and always loved to have her way.

He denied being irresponsible stating that he gave their children N500 per day for food.

The defendant stated that he paid their school fees regularly but that Yetunde stood against their children learning a vocation.

Waidi added that Yetunde was always against his chastising their children and that one of them eventually got impregnated at an early age.

The defendant admitted beating his wife. According to him, he beat her only thrice and these resulted in her having swollen eyes at the three occasions.

“I can’t any further in my marriage to Wasiu because he is bent on killing me, ”Yetunde  said.

“My husband loves to be honoured as the head of the family but refused to take up the responsibilities that come with the title.

“I am the one running our home. I bear the brunt of the expenses of eating and clothing my family and also train our children in school.

“Waidi never bothers to know how food gets to the table nor shows interest in our children’s education.

“I carry out odd jobs and work round the clock every day to meet my family’s need but my husband has always been indifferent to my suffering.

“The only thing my husband loves to do is to drink and get drunk. He will always return home feeling tipsy and in a sorry state.

“My lord, hell is always let loose when he returns home in this state. He will start to complain and turn the whole house upside down.

“At the end of the day, he will pounce on me and beat me to a pulp. He won’t leave me until our neighbours come to my aid.

“My lord, any time he beats me he leaves me with swollen eyes. He once beat me and didn’t let go until I fainted.

“My lord, if I continue with this kind of lifestyle I will die young and our children will suffer.

“I earnestly pray the court to end our relationship. Our children and I can do without him.

“I again plead for the custody of all our children. They need my motherly care and guidance to grow up and turn out well in life, “the plaintiff stated.

Wasiu in his evidence stated that, “My lord, there is no way peace can rein in a home where the woman always want to lord it over the man.

“Yetunde is domineering in nature. She always insists on having her way and I usually resist her. I believe it’s best we go our different ways.

“I do to our children the best I can. I give them N500 per day for food and pay their school fees as at when due.

“My wife never ceases to provoke me to anger but I always restrain myself from beating her.

“I beat Yetunde only thrice since we got married more than two decades ago. At each occasion she had swollen eyes.

“My wife refuse that I train our children. She refused that they learn a vocation after I trained them in school and fought me for chastising our daughter who was wayward. This girl was impregnated at an early age,” he concluded.

Giving his judgment, the court president, Chief Ademola Odunade pronounced their wedlock dissolved.

He granted custody of their last three children to the plaintiff and ordered the defendant to be responsible for their welfare.

According to him, priority should be given to their feeding, education and health care.
