A woman, Lola Babatunde, has brought a divorce suit against her husband, Taofeek Babatunde, at the Oja Oba/ Mapo Court C Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State.
Lola, who complained that she was tired of her 12-year-old marriage to her husband, accused him of battery.
The plaintiff stated that her husband did not trust her and was in the habit of monitoring her movements and blackmailing her.
Lola told the court she was no longer comfortable staying in a marriage wherein her husband lacks confidence in her. She thus prayed for its dissolution.
Taofeek refused that their marriage be dissolved.
The defendant denied ever having any misunderstanding with the plaintiff not to mention beating her.
He added that he was always monitoring his wife because of her beauty.
Lola in her testimony said: “My body aches; I feel pain as a result of my husband’s constant beating.
“Taofeek lacks confidence in me. He does not trust me. He believes more in the rumours his friends carry about me and also the lies. It is unwise and unsafe to stay under the same roof with such a man under the guise of marriage.
“My husband is always suspicious of me and therefore monitors my movements.
“He accuses me of sleeping with other men on my job and blackmails me.
“A friend of his lied to him that he always saw a particular man take me away in his car. My husband believed his friend more than me.
“Another friend of his lied that he slept with me. Taofeek rushed back home looking weird. He beat me almost to a state of coma and broke my arm. I was incapacitated for weeks.
“He came across a picture I took with a male collegue and got furious. Like other times, he descended on me with punches and refused to stop until I fainted. I was revived at the hospital and it was diagnosed that I had internal injury. We spent through the nose at the hospital before I regained my health.
“My husband is indifferent to our children’s education. I am the one paying their fees and buying their books. He does nothing in this regard.
“My lord, it is risky living under the same roof with a man who is jealous and doesn’t trust me. Taofeek will one day kill me and our children will suffer because he doesn’t show any concern towards their welfare.
“I, therefore, entreat this honourable court to end our relationship,” the plaintiff said.
Taofeek in his response said, “My lord, I still love my wife. I, therefore, don’t agree to divorce.
“I met my wife as a young girl and fell in love with her. I was the one who trained her in school. I invested much in her and ensured she turned out fine in life just because I love her.
“Lola and I never had any misunderstanding. I am therefore surprised at all she said.
“My lord, I must confess that it is difficult not to monitor my wife. This is so because of her beauty. Lola is beautiful and I can’t stand any man sharing her with me, not after all that I have spent or invested in her.
“It pains me to know that my wife hates to identify with me in public. She actually restrains me from attending functions with her.
“I am surprised that my wife accuses me of being jealous. My lord, if anyone is jealous, it is Lola. She fights me any time she sees me with the opposite sex.
“I am a responsible husband and father. I care for our children and I am fully responsible for their education,” he concluded.
Ruling after he had listened to both parties, the court president, Chief Ademola Odunade, dissolved their union.
He granted the plaintiff custody of their children and asked the defendant to be responsible for their feeding.
He also mandated him to be in charge of their education and health care.
