Hamzat assumes office as Commissioner of Police in Oyo

CP Adebola A. Hamzat has assumed office as the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, the new CP has served in various capacities as a police officer prior to his new posting.

The statement reads, “CP Hamzat has held and served in different command and staff positions, including but not limited to Officer in Charge of the Criminal Intelligence Bureau (CIB), Divisional Crime Officer at Funtua Police Divisional Headquarters in Katsina State, Divisional Police Officer at Danja Divisional Police Headquarters in Katsina State, and 2i/c Operations at the Department of Operations (DOPs) in Katsina State Command.

Other positions held by CP Hamzat include Divisional Police Officer at ‘A’ Divisional Police Headquarters in Jos, Plateau State, Personal Assistant to DIG FCID, DIG Abimbola Jolade Ojomo (Rtd), 2i/c State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Jos, Plateau State, Staff Officer InfoTech at the Department of ICT in FHQ, Commandant of Police Secondary School in Akpabuyo, Calabar, ACP Promotions at FORSEC, FHQ, Abuja, and DCP DFA at Sokoto State Police Command.

He has also served as DCP DFA at Enugu State Police Command, DCP SCID at Osun State Police Command, DCP SCID at Ondo State Police Command, and CP Border Patrol Force at Ops Department, FHQ, Abuja, where he made significant contributions to the fight against the proliferation of small arms and light weapons into the country from troubled Sub-Saharan African states.

CP Adebola Ayinde Hamzat is a renowned investigator and intelligence expert whose operational experience and core intelligence competencies earned him duty tours with strong commendations at the United Nations Missions in Kosovo (UNMIK) and United Nations Missions in Timor Leste (East Timor).

He served as Chief of the Special Investigation Unit Regional Investigations in Prizren Region, Chief of Regional Investigation in Ferizaj, and Chief of the War Crime Investigation Section, where he was specifically responsible for reducing criminal activities of rebels and insurgents through high-level intelligence analysis and technology-based forensics.

He was also the Team Leader of the Serious Crimes Unit at the National Investigations Department PNTL Hqtrs in Obrigado Dili, Timor Leste.”

In another development, the Police have confirmed the arrest of 11 suspects in connection with various crimes committed at different locations in Oyo State.

During a press briefing at the State Police Command in Eleyele, Ibadan, the PPRO, Osifeso, stated that the suspects were apprehended at different locations.

He disclosed that seven out of the eleven arrested suspects were caught in the act of attempting to hijack a lorry loaded with goods worth millions of naira.

The recovered items, as listed by the police, include a white Nissan Cabster with the registration number AKD 362 YE, nineteen pieces of LG split air conditioners, five pieces of Hisense split air conditioners, six pieces of 43-inch smart televisions, seven pieces of Hisense refrigerators, twenty-four pieces of installation kits, and eighteen pieces of AC hangers.

The statement further explains, “On 1st July 2023 at about 0200hrs, Hammed Oseni and Sodiq Olateju, both employees (drivers) of an undisclosed luxury furniture company in Lagos, were tasked with driving the company’s Nissan CABSTER Space Bus loaded with air conditioners, television sets, and other hi-tech home appliances worth nine million naira (#9,000,000) from their Ikeja showroom in Lagos State to a destination in Ilorin, Kwara State.

However, when they reached a desolate spot in the Offa-Metta area along the Oyo/Ogbomoso expressway, five members of a criminal gang in a white Toyota Corolla car (registration number unknown), armed with guns and other dangerous weapons, attacked the drivers and diverted the vehicle to an unknown destination.

As a result of this incident, the Monitoring Unit took action, and after a discreet intelligence gathering, two members of the criminal gang were apprehended at their respective hideouts in Oyo town and Ibadan.

Further interrogation revealed that the suspects were masterminds of similar criminal activities in the area and had recently been released from prison custody after serving time for various criminal charges. Their voluntary confessions and subsequent information led to the arrest of their criminal receivers.”

Additionally, four suspected car snatchers were arrested, and seven stolen vehicles were recovered.
