Rampaging gunmen suspected to be killer herdsmen in Riyom local government area of Plateau State on Sunday ambushed three youths, killed one person and injured two others.
A source close to the local government revealed that the incident occurred at Riyom-Kum road of the local government at about 9:00 pm adding that the three youths were ambushed by the gunmen who have been terrorising the council area.
According to the source, one Bitrus Chollom aged 36 was hacked to death while the two others – Isaac David and Emmanuel Davou – escaped with severe machete cuts, adding that the deceased was survived by his wife, Mrs Esther Bitrus and four children – Tiss Bitrus, 12; Peace Bitrus, 10; Obed Bitrus, 8 and Mafeng Btrus, 5.
The youth leader of the community, Mr. Tengwong Dalyop, who confirmed the incident strongly condemned the attack on the innocent locals who were returning from Riyom to Kum where they had gone to attend a social function.
“We have been struck with another tragic incident by suspected Fulani militias who ambushed and killed one of our youth last night again. The Fulani have continued attacking and killing our people without any form of provocation and in spite of security matching order by the Commissioner of Police that there should never be any form of aggression,” he said.
He further pointed out that the incident has been reported at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Riyom waiting for needed action such as invitation of the leadership of the attacking side by the Police Force for interrogation and other necessary actions as unanimously agreed at a security meeting held on February 10, 2021.
Meanwhile, the Coordinator Emancipation Centre for Crisis Victims in Nigeria-ECCVN, Barrister Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, has appealed to the government and security agencies in the state to arrest the situation, adding that farmers in Riyom and Bassa local government areas were afraid to go to their farms for fear of being attacked.
Attempts to confirm the incident from the State Police command proved abortive as the Police Public Relations Officer ASP Gabriel Ubah could not be reached via his phone.
