Gunmen hack one to death, injure two in Plateau

Still reeling from the recent attack on some residents of Barakin’Ladi local government area of Plateau State, one person was hacked to death by gunmen suspected to be foreign herdsmen while two others sustained injuries on Sunday in the neighbouring Riyom council area.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that the incident occurred at about 8:45 pm when the gunmen numbering about ten ambushed three young men who were natives of Byei of Riyom Riyom local government and hacked one of them identified as Stephen Joshua to death.

It was gathered that the two others who escaped with gunshots wound are now receiving treatment at Riyom Health Care Center.

According to the source, the attackers also destroyed many farms and bans before they bolted away, adding that no fewer than 10 farms were destroyed in the attack.

A resident of the area who craved anonymity said those living close to the scene of the incident were surprised that such an attack could be carried out by the armed militia not far from the military post between Wereng camp and Byei.

The State Police Command who confirmed the attack through its Public Relations Officer, ASP Gabriel Ubah Ogabah, said one person was hacked to death, adding that the command has commenced investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, Plateau Initiative for Development and Advancement of the Natives (PIDAN) in a communique issued at the end of its meeting in Jos condemned the spate of killings in Barakin’Ladi, Riyom, Bassa and other parts of the state by suspected herdsmen.

It also frowned at the increasing appearance of suspected Boko Haram members in the streets of Jos Metropolis and the spate of the kidnapping of law-abiding citizens particularly in Bassa, Jos-North and Jos East LGAs.

PIDAN, in the communique signed by its President Professor Aboi Madaki and its Secretary Comrade Nanle Gujor Gujor, commended the peace process put in place by the Plateau State Government and called on it to redouble its efforts at stopping the continued marauding activities of Fulani herdsmen so as to curb further killings and kidnapping.
