Gulak was killed on his way to the airport ― Imo Police Command

The Imo State Police Command has explained the circumstances surrounding the murder of Ahmed Gulak, former Special Adviser (Political) to President Goodluck Jonathan.

In a statement endorsed by the command’s spokesman, Bala Elkana, on Sunday afternoon, the command explained that the late Gulak was intercepted and attacked by armed bandits on his way to the Sam Mbakwe Airport.

The late Adamawa politician was said to be travelling in a Toyota Camry cab when his assailants accosted him and two others on the way to catch a flight at the airport.

“On the 30/5/2021, at about 07:20hrs, armed bandits intercepted and attacked a Toyota Camry cab carrying Ahmed Gulak and two others who were on their way to Sam Mbakwe Airport to catch a flight,” the Command stated.

The statement further explained that “Ahmed Gulak left his room at Protea Hotel without informing the Police nor sister agencies in view of the fragile security situation in the South-East and Imo in particular. He left without any security escorts and while the cab driver took the irregular route to the airport, six-armed bandits who rode in a Toyota Sienna intercepted, identified and shot at Ahmed Gulak at around Umueze Obiangwu in Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area close to the Airport.”

The statement added that “the Commissioner of Police Imo, CP Abutu Yaro, has directed a discreet investigation into the matter as Tactical and Special forces have been deployed to cordon the area and arrest perpetrators.”

Meanwhile, the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has distanced itself from the murder of the politician.

IPOB, in a statement endorsed by its spokesman, Emma Powerful, said that Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State should be held responsible for the murder, reiterating that the group was not even aware that Gulak was in the state let alone his movements within the state.

The group declared Gulak’s murder as “professional assassination” and asked those pointing accusing fingers at the association to look into the direction of Imo Government House.
